Kilmartin Primary School Twins Two Toilets!

Some time ago, in the days before coronavirus and home schooling, Ms Carter suggested investigating a charity called ‘Toilet Twinning’.  I had not heard of the charity before and I was intrigued to find out more.

We are very fortunate in this country to have access to fresh water and good toilet facilities which we take for granted as just features of our homes.  However, in the poorest communities in the world there are two billion people who do not have somewhere safe to go to the toilet.  The current world population is about 7.8 billion so a very significant number of people don’t have a toilet.

Hygienic, private toilet facilities help protect lives, reducing the risk of sanitation related illness and disease.  Near 900 children die every day from diseases linked to unsafe toilets and dirty water.  This is so sad.

Neith Mckellar and I decided we’d like to try to support the Toilet Twinning charity.  We organised to do a fundraiser through our Daily Mile Run.  The whole school including the nursery took part, everyone participating was given a sponsor form to get home folks to donate money.  We managed to raise enough money to twin two toilets.

I think everyone in the school felt pleased to make a contribution and it maybe also made us think about how lucky we are to have good sanitation and fresh water.

The water and sanitation programme provided by the charity costs an average of £60 per household.  The charity uses funds to install toilet facilities and fresh water, but also importantly helps educate people and communities about sanitation hygiene.  As we all know, especially now, washing hands in clean water is very important to keep us healthy.

Kilmartin Primary School has now proudly received its Toilet Twinning certificates.  Thank you to everyone who took part and to all the home folks who donated.
